Visuals User Guide

The following information details the content of the data visuals and definitions of certain survey components.

AM/PM Rider Surveys: September 2017 - March 2018

  • Travel Time (AM/PM): Between the Broadway (Astoria) and Bowling Green (Lower Manhattan)
  • Broadway platform wait time (AM): Duration of time spent waiting for N/W trains on the station's platform
  • Lex/59 St stairwell crowding (AM/PM): Low = Stairwells sparsely populated with free-flow conditions; Medium = Stairwells moderately populated with free-flow conditions; Full = Stairwells heavily populated with slow free-flow conditions; Packed = Stairwells extremely populated with queues forming at the platform level
  • Lex/59 St Transfer Time (AM/PM): Transfer times include when the train stopped at the station, the walk to the other platform, and when the next boarded train started moving.
  • Track Speeds (AM/PM): Actual train speeds between stations
  • Dwell Times (AM/PM): Recorded when the trains came to complete stops until it started moving again
  • Onboard Crowding (AM/PM): Observed by the surveyor in a single car, in the middle of the train, while looking into the adjacent cars to help determine overall crowding levels (A majority of train cars were the same in regards to crowding levels, with the end cars being less crowded than the others)

Level 1: Plenty of seats and standing area available

Level 3: Seats are full and there is standing space available away from the car doors

Level 2: Seats are full, but there is ample standing space available

Level 4 to crush-load: Seats are full and no standing space is available, often preventing riders from boarding

Real-Time Data Dashboards: Compares real-time data to the scheduled data for the 4/5 lines (September 2017 - March 2018)

  • Travel Time (AM/PM):  Between Lex/59 St and Bowling Green 
  • Segment Travel Time (AM/PM): Between Lex/59 St  and 14 St/Union Square; 14 St/Union Square and Brooklyn Bridge/City Hall
  • Train Counts (AM/PM): Station-level train throughput by the hour

Real-Time Data 2017 v. 2018: Compares real-time data to the scheduled data for the 4/5 lines (September - December)
